Grand Canyon-South Rim
After visiting the North Rim of the Grand Canyon a few weeks ago, we were looking forward to our visit to the south rim. We weren't disappointed. We stayed in Williams, Arizona which is about 60 miles south of the South Rim. Williams is where The Grand Canyon Railroad is located.
On the first day, we rode the train up to the south rim. This was a lot of fun.
The railroad employs a crew of Wild West Actors who show up at various points during the train trip.
Now the canyon. What can I say? It's the Grand Canyon!
I snapped this photo of a California Condor. I know that the picture is lousy, but I wasn't quick enough with my camera to catch it when it was directly overhead. You're going to have to take my word for it that it is a condor and not a turkey buzzard.
One of the things that we've tried to do at each stop is to seek out the semi-retired folks that work around the places we're visiting to find things to do that all the other tourists may not know about. On the second day, a gentleman who worked at the campground suggested that we take Hwy 89 east along the rim (away from the village) and see another couple of parks that are not as crowded. This was a pleasant drive. The overlooks were just a few steps from the road (this made Hannah and Kendall happy since they hate hiking).
This is a side view of the Sunset Crater. They no longer allow hiking along the rim, but I did find this aerial photo of the crater on the web.
