Get Your Kicks...

While driving from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, we jumped-off the interstate to experience the longest remaining section of historic Route 66. This is about a 100 mile section between Kingman and Crookton, Arizona. There are many smaller sections of Route 66 all along the way of the old route, but this section is the longest.

It's mostly what you would expect... sparsely populated and dotted with businesses that have gone under since I-40 opened.

Some of these communities are seeing a resurgence of tourism with all the interest in nostalgia. I am told that much of the inspiration for the plot and the set of the Disney/Pixar movie "Cars" came from this section of Route 66.

If you ever find yourself along this stretch of I-40, jump off the interstate for a few miles and visit the Hackberry General Store.

Currently owned and operated by John Pritchard, the Hackberry General Store is a treasure trove of memorabilia of all things old; particularly the hayday of Route 66.

If you go to Hackberry, make sure to buy a bottle of his Route 66 "Route Beer".

We've found the end of the rainbow! It's at a Phillips 66 station on old Route 66.
